when it comes to ideas, humans typically look to the animal world for muse. birds taking flight leads to man lifting off the runway. fish dive lower and lower into the sea, and submarines try to reach their depths. so on and so forth. fashion is no exception. prime example- cheetah print. another example, and the one i will be blogging about today, is fur.
when many girls think of wearing fur, they look as scared as if the animal originally wearing it was charging right at them. yet, fur can be the best winter piece if you can embrace it. what is the issue? i think the fear of picking the wrong fur keeps many from experimenting with it at all. or thinking that fur is too posh for every day. my thoughts? life is too short not to be fabulously posh every minute of your existence. if you can be confident with your fur choices, you can be confident in life baby. let's discuss how to do so.
rule 1: vest vs jacket. a vest can be a little more subtle, so it may be better starting off with this one. you also have more freedom of choosing what to wear underneath it. layering with a flannel or jean jacket will dress down the fur and make you feel more comfortable. on the other hand, jackets make more of a statement and should be the focus of your outfit.
rule 2: colors that work. natural colors are your best bet. darker shades of brown, black, and white will be your best friends. i do not like gray furs. i think that is more personal preference than a law of fashion, so if you think you can make gray work, go for it! but i am not a fan. my latest fur purchase is a blush pink fur jacket (as you can see below) and that color really works for me. it's outside of the box and fills my pink needs. but outside of a light (and i mean light) shade of pink, i would not venture into color. that is when it starts getting tacky and a bit scary, to be honest. if you are questioning the color, do not purchase it. fur is already a scary fashion subject, as we have established, so if you are no sure about the color, you will not be confident about the fur itself. that leads us to number 3.
rule 3: complete the look. a black sweater will work perfectly paired with either vest or jacket, but that is playing it safe. challenge yourself to pick a patterned tee to layer with it. just make sure the patterns stay neutral and stay small. i prefer the extra glamour (not shocking) and have an all sequins navy blouse that pairs very nicely with my brown vest. fur makes the top of the outfit heavy, so keep the bottom simple. black skinny jeans or a straight maxi skirt can do the trick. details, details, details. i cannot say that enough. yes fur is a statement, but add a few rings, layer simple necklaces, or wear a funky shoe- that can change your fur game. turquoise is a personal fav of mine that compliments furs very nicely.
fur can be tricky, i totally understand. remember the rules, but also have fun with it. i encourage you to try your own variations. put your style to use and show me how you do fur. if you take anything from this post, take this: wear the fur, do not let the fur wear you.

beware of the beast.
first of all, that wall though.
here is my new fur obsession. go check out metaphorboutique.com. they even have outfit ideas to go along with their products. super cute stuff. i paired it with a half black shirt that has a bit of higher collar and a oxblood floral pattern stitched into it. i love the way the light blue complements the pink shades. the blush in the fur stays within the color family of the top, which keeps the outfit flowing. black tights and chunky wedges to top it all off. oh and a carmel brûlée latte. thank you starbucks.
